The Hair Dryer: Buttery Spring Corn - Oct '20

We ducked-off to the Main Range for a 48-hour skin-tour Friday & Saturday (2nd & 3rd Oct). Whilst we managed to share the driving, we arrived at CP turning circle 6:30am, Friday morning.

The road had been cleared and open for a grand total of 36 hours prior to our arrival. Four cars at the turning circle.

We skinned out from the river crossing around 8am and landed below Club Lake level around 11:30am. We’d skinned all the way from the river crossing, but in admittance; we defiantly skinned a fair bit of grass.

Pitched the nylon in about 15 mins and skinned up to Carruthers to drop Clubbie. Lapped it several times before we decided to have a late lunch and save ourselves for a sunset slide. Clear skies yielded a warm tone bath for The Western Faces as the equally warm wind blew some 20-25 knots atop the Carruthers peak.

The last run happened to be glorious Australian corn, every turn was like knifing butter. Sun down, moon up, on a full moon evening.and the last evening before the daylight saving switch.

The following morning the wind had come up a touch as the inbound front & NW cloud band was moving Eastwards towards us.

We dropped Club Lake for 3 more lines. Classic Spring cover as the hair dryer blew in at some- 30 knots on the summit of Carruthers by our last run.

Packed up camp and saddled up for a cross country bash, this time we skin more grass than the white spring carpet. At least I did.

Arrived back to the river crossing to find 20-30 people (ill-dressed for the wind up top) crossing the river for a Saturday sojourn. The sight of that was comforting to know we’d picked the weather window.
