Oui Oui Chamonix!

We found ourselves on the road an hour earlier than we had planned. We just couldn’t wait to escape the city. We were headed for two nights at ‘Chamonix’ apartment located in Thredbo Village. The residence is conveniently located just minutes walk from the central hub of Thredbo.

Our getaway was just ‘what the doctor had ordered’ - a chance to unwind in a location known for its cool summer climate and boundless activities.

We arrived in Thredbo by mid-morning and had some time to kill ahead of our check-in so we decided to don the hiking boots and hit the trail; straight up and onto the Main Range where you meet the Kosciuszko Summit Walk. Once we’d hit the top we were above the valley cloud with fast-changing light and variable conditions. It felt like we were experiencing 4 seasons in one day - synonymous with the weather in the mountains.

We managed to brew a coffee and consume a quick snack on the summit and leg it back down into Thredbo in the dying hour of the day’s last light, where we enjoyed a light meal for dinner in the comfort of our warm lounge room of Chamonix.

We woke to the iconic call of Kookaburras outside our window. Our legs were sore and out of sync with the hours put in on the trail the previous afternoon, but as many would agree it’s better to just forge on and push through it than to stand around moping about it. So we went down into the village to Thredbo Retail and picked up a couple of hard-tail mountain bikes and set off into the Pilot Wilderness for a morning ride with a packed lunch. By late morning we’d done our fair share of uphill climbs so stopped for an early lunch and took in the mild summer’s day.

By the afternoon our bodies were cooked.

We returned back to Chamonix to put the feet up and plan a relaxed arvo. But we quickly realised we had one last, blood-rushing, rejuvenating activity to go, before we flipped the ‘Do Not Disturb‘ sign on the door. We felt the need to reward our bodies with a Wim Hof session in the cascades behind Woodridge Chalets.

We were told the water was 14°C but felt closer to single digits - even after a full morning of exercise.

The cascades are the most surreal, tucked-away place of Thredbo, yet only a 5-minute walk from the Village and Chamonix. It really is a beautiful spot to unwind and hyperventilate!

That evening we enjoyed a few glasses of red at sunset, as we soaked it up in the old ski lift chair that is outside the residence.

We enjoyed the convenience of home-cooking a steak & salad before we ‘hit the hay’ around 9 pm.

Our final morning was spent enjoying a sleep in, a coffee and taking in the slow, peaceful morning. We’d achieved a lot in 2 days and as we packed the car we talked about returning to do it all again, in winter.

Chamonix offers the luxury of walk-in, walk-out convenience whilst keeping the (occasional) bustling village at an arm’s length. Summer or winter, you couldn’t list the amount of fun activities available on a single blog post. Bookings can be made via the socials link:
